Balloon Release for Bereaved Families

pearl_beach_2.JPGThe momentum is building Down Under to have October 15th officially declared as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day across Australia.

But just this month, another Oct. 15th passed by, and the Day is as yet undeclared here.

Nonetheless, we honoured our babies who died. Not subversively, not always quietly. But always with love for the children we lost to miscarriage, stillbirth and post natal causes. Always in honour of their memory.

My family once again observed October 15th by lighting a candle at 7 pm, and keeping the flame going until 8 pm. It was beautiful and powerful, as always.

But I wish I could have made it up to Pearl Beach (Central Coast NSW), 260 km away.

Stephanie and Kelvin Wade held a candlelit, balloon release right on the beach. Their friends, Sam and Adrian, played music for the service. About 60 people came, to honour their 17 babies. Stephanie describes an unmistakable peace and tranquility that comforted these mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, etc...

1 in 4 women will lose a baby in her lifetime. 1 in 3 pregnancies ends in loss. An event like this balloon release clearly demonstrates that it is not just the mother and father who grieve. Pregnancy and infant loss affects everyone who had been lovingly anticipating the birth of their child, their grandchild, their little brother or sister…because this was not just a baby, you see -- this was their baby.
